FAQ: Non-Medical In-Home Caregiving Services

What are caregiving services?

I’m new to caregiving. Where do I start?

Finding care can feel overwhelming when you’re just getting started. Begin by thinking about where your loved one is having the most difficulty and what would make everyday life easier or safer. You don’t have to figure everything out at once. At Home Seniors can help Tucson families understand their options and decide what type of in-home assistance would be most helpful.

How do I help an older adult plan for the future?

Planning ahead gives an older adult more opportunity to make their wishes known and remain involved in important decisions. Discuss in-home care, transportation, finances, healthcare, and who they would like involved in future decisions. Important documents such as advance directives and powers of attorney can also be discussed with the appropriate legal or healthcare professionals. Having these conversations early gives families time to prepare and make thoughtful decisions together.

How can I help my family member if I don't live nearby?

Living far away can make caring for an older family member more challenging, but you don’t have to manage everything from a distance. Start by identifying where your loved one could use assistance and which responsibilities are difficult to coordinate when you can’t be there in person.

At Home Seniors can provide a dependable local presence in Tucson, helping with everyday activities and giving families greater reassurance when they live out of town.

My needs are urgent!

If you need care quickly, contact At Home Seniors as soon as possible. We’ll discuss your situation, the assistance needed, and your preferred schedule. We understand that circumstances can change suddenly after an illness, hospitalization, fall, or other unexpected event, and we’ll help you determine what care options may be available.

What types of non-medical caregiving services are available?

Non-medical caregiving includes help with personal care, ADLs, meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, medication reminders, and other everyday activities that are becoming more difficult due to aging.

At Home Seniors can combine these services based on the type and amount of assistance each person requires. Whether you need assistance a few times a week or daily care, our caregivers are here to help you remain comfortable, active, and as independent as possible at home.

How can I help an older adult with day-to-day activities?

Everyday activities can become more difficult with age, illness, or changes in mobility. Start by noticing which tasks are becoming harder and where a little assistance could make the day safer or easier. At Home Seniors caregivers can help with daily activities while encouraging older adults to continue doing what they can safely manage for themselves.

Can I get care services for someone in a hospital or nursing home?

At Home Seniors can provide non-medical caregiver assistance in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and skilled nursing facilities. A caregiver can provide additional companionship and one-on-one assistance based on the individual’s situation.

We can also help families prepare for the transition home by arranging caregiver assistance for recovery and everyday activities.

Terminology

Caregiving and healthcare can come with unfamiliar terms. Understanding some of the most common terminology can make it easier to discuss care options and determine what type of support may be helpful for you or your loved one.

What are ADLs

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are basic everyday tasks that help a person live safely and independently. They generally include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, transferring, and mobility. When these activities become difficult, an in-home caregiver can provide assistance while encouraging the older adult to remain as independent as possible.

Hospice Care

Hospice care focuses on comfort and quality of life for individuals with a serious, life-limiting illness. Hospice services are provided by a specialized healthcare team. At Home Seniors can provide non-medical caregiver support alongside hospice care, including companionship, personal care, meal assistance, light housekeeping, safety supervision, and respite for family caregivers.

What is Respite Care

Respite care provides temporary relief for family members who regularly care for an older adult or loved one. At Home Seniors caregivers can step in for a few hours, regularly scheduled days, overnight care, or longer periods when needed. This gives family caregivers time to rest, work, attend appointments, travel, or simply take a break while knowing their loved one has dependable support at home.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Each person has different routines, abilities, preferences, and needs, which may change over time. At Home Seniors provides personal caregiver support that includes companionship, hygiene care, meal preparation, safety supervision, activities, mobility assistance, and help with everyday routines. We provide familiar, consistent support that helps your loved one remain safe and comfortable.

Companion Care

Companion care offers social interaction and practical assistance that can help older adults remain connected and active in their home. Time together can be as simple as activities, meal preparation, errands, transportation, light housekeeping, and assistance with other everyday routines. Companion visits can be centered around the activities a person enjoys, while providing helpful assistance throughout the day.

Light Housekeeping

Light housekeeping helps maintain a clean, comfortable, and safer living environment. At Home Seniors caregivers can assist with everyday household tasks such as washing dishes, wiping kitchen surfaces, light bathroom cleaning, laundry, changing bed linens, taking out household trash, and keeping frequently used living areas tidy. Our focus is on routine household tasks that support the client’s comfort, safety, and independence at home.

Care for more than one person

Sometimes more than one person in the same home could benefit from caregiver assistance. At Home Seniors can coordinate support for couples or other family members living together, with each person receiving the assistance that is appropriate for them. Whether care is needed because of aging, disability, illness, or recovery from hospitalization, we can help determine how to support everyone in the home.

Does Medicare cover caregiving services

Original Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing non-medical care when that is the only care a person needs. Medicare may cover certain eligible home health services when specific requirements are met. Families should contact Medicare or their Medicare plan directly to confirm current benefits and coverage.

Long-Term Care Insurance

At Home Seniors works with many long-term care insurance providers. Coverage and eligibility depend on the individual policy and the insurer’s requirements. We can help families understand what information may be needed to begin the benefits process.
